Biography

Dan Song is a Chinese-Swedish visual artist, painter and researcher working between Amsterdam and Stockholm. Her multidisciplinary practice spans painting, drawing, sculpture and poetry, exploring the intersections of human movement, psychology and complex historical lineages.

Informed by a life experience spanning three continents—Asia, North America, and Europe—Song’s visual language bridges a cross-cultural perspective with an analytical inquiry into human mechanics. She developed her artistic foundation at Donghua University in Shanghai, earning a Bachelor's degree in an interdisciplinary fashion design and engineering program with a specialization in fashion figure drawing. She later expanded her understanding of the human body through an advanced scientific career, a PhD focused on neuromotor control at the University of Southern California, followed by research in robotics at KTH and tech entrepreneurship in Virtual Reality. Parallel to this analytical trajectory, her lifelong practice in Chinese folk dance and classical ballet deeply informs her exploration of bodily tension, rhythm, and form. The diverse background provides Song with a distinct intuition, allowing her to capture both the physiological and emotional dynamics of figurative landscapes.

Song is a recipient of the Carina Ari Foundation’s Honorary Paris Atelier Residency. She is currently expanding her conceptual and studio practice in the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Her works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions and are held in private collections in Stockholm, Beijing, Paris, and Amsterdam.​
